I Am Queen Mary

Produced for Powerhouse Arts

This work is a replica of a 24 feet public sculpture on view at the Danish West Indian Warehouse in Copenhagen, Denmark. The piece commemorates a slave revolt led by three women in St. Croix in 1878, and challenges Denmark’s role in slavery and the commemoration of its colonial past. The artists and the Ford Foundation approached Powerhouse Arts to oversee the fabrication of the artwork from start to finish, with an ambitious timeline of four weeks.
